Early metal ashtray with colonial type man smoking a long pipe.

Raised "Intaglio" decor, wonderful 3-D effect.  The man has long, receding hair, long nose, high collar and wide cuff.  He's smoking a long pipe with a stabilizer on the bottom of the bowl. Exceptional artwork, very interesting piece.  Handcrafted.

It is made of a heavy metal called "Spelter".  Spelter was a less expensive substitute for bronze used in the mid 19th century.  This pipe tray was finished to resemble bronze, but only remants of the finish remain on the base.  The surface looks and feels like pewter.

Measures 7 1/8" long, approx. 5" wide and is 3/4" tall. Weighs 1.2 lbs.  It is stamped on the base with the number "70" in a circle.

Rests can accommodate pipes, cigarettes or cigars. Has a hole so it could be hung on the wall when not in use.
