SOLD ncredibly rare Air France compass card airline ashtray.

Made in the 1940s-1950s, these rarely seen ashtrays feature the artwork of Lucien Boucher encased inside heavy glass ashtrays.

Lucien Boucher (1889-1971) was a French poster artist active in the 1950's who in cartographic circles is known for the work he did for Air France in which he produced a few world maps and zodian constellation maps.  His work is bold, colorful, and very much sought after.  Vintage posters of his work sell from $600.00 to multi-thousands of dollars depending on the condition.

Boucher's artwork is perfectly preserved inside the glass which makes these fabulous airline relic ashtrays even more fabulous.  See images below for art details. The compass card is accented with gold foil.

Each weigh 3.5 lbs.  BIG cigar ashtrays. Measure 6.5" square and 1.75" deep.

The artwork is in excellent condition. The glass is in good condition with evidence of chigger smoothing.  Someone has ground the inner rim chiggers (miniscule sliver chips) smooth.  Most likely used in the upper class lounge, vintage ashtrays like this receive chiggers from gentlemen tapping pipes on the inner rim.  Some smoothing repairs were done on the exterior rim also.  The repairs are not evident unless studied closely. The seat was laquered, there are a couple pin holes and tiny spots of chipped lacquer (see image 8)
