SOLD   Early black green glass full-rigged sailing ship ashtray.

This big old relic weighs 6 lbs.  In normal lighting, the glass appears black, under a bright backlight it glows a beautiful deep forest green.  This type of glass is called "Black Glass"
Glassmakers produced black glass  on this continent and in Europe from the mid 1600s up through the latter part of the 1900s. The term Black glass refers to glass usually in shades of dark green and amber. Often the glass is so dense that the color appears black.
A full rigged ship, usually referred to as a "frigate" is a sailing vessel with three or more masts.  The ship represented here appears to be from the 18th or early 19th century.
This old ashtray has heavy bottom-wear, shown in image 8.  Bottom-wear is caused by surface friction over the years.  It is marked by maker or artist "JC". We were unable to locate information on the mark.  We do believe this ashtray is at least 75 years old, perhaps much older.
In excellent condition!  No chips or cracks.  Glass was mold pressed with raised decor, might be sandwich glass. Measures 8" wide, 2" tall.  Will accomodate cigars.
Perfect for the nautical enthusiast.  Lovely curiosity on the beach house deck.  Big, heavy ashtray is perfect for outdoors and parties.
