Huge Viking Amethyst Glass Cigar Ashtray

SOLD   Immense 1930s - 1940s New Martinsville / Viking amethyst glass cigar ashtray.

This heavy solid glass cigar ashtray was made by New Martinsville Glass Co. before they re-organized into Viking Art Glass, a popular maker of mid-century glass.  The color and size pre-date this ashtray to the New Martinsville period.  A beautiful, rich, deep, jewel-like purple, different from amethyst of the 1950s to 1960s.

The breathtaking art deco form can be found in Viking Art Glass references, part no. 1101.

The color becomes darker according to the thickness of the glass.  Excuse the light reflections appearing in the images.

Huge ashtray measures 10" long per side.  It is 1" larger on each side than the 1960s cataloged size of  9".  It weighs 5 pounds. Stands 3" tall. Large enough to hold three big cigars very comfortably. Big cigar in main image above is 6" long.

RARE Item in Good condition. The base has heavy shelf-wear (see image 4), built-up naturally with age.  The corners have minor mini bumps that have been polished smooth. Must inspect closely to find.   No chips or cracks, glass is translucent and clean. Beautiful bowl, with an interesting history, for candles or incense when not in ash service.
