Higgin's glass objects are hot collector items today. Higgins was known among the very fab in the late 1950s to early 1960s.
The gold signature indicates it is a piece made at Dearborn Glass in Bedford Park, IL between 1957-1964. Michael Higgins died in 1999, Frances Higgins in 2004.
Higgins made most of their art glass with the "bent glass" technique. This large ashtray is made of a thick solid sheet of clear glass that was pressed over a mold and "bent" into shape. The colored enamel decor was hand applied on the surface and then covered with another layer of glass, protecting the enamel from wear. The gold painted sand dollar decor is hand applied on the surface of the glass. It is signed in gold "Higgins".
In very good condition. There is a thin, nearly invisible sliver chip beneath the rim. You must turn it over and look closely to find it. It has been polished smooth. The enamel decor is in original condition. The gold decor is 90% present, more is present than shows in the images. The "shine" of the gold plays havoc with the camera. Unprotected gold will fade over the years from cleaning and rubbing. HAND WASH only, no chemicals.
Trapped within the layers of glass are many intentional bubbles, the perfect touch for the seashore decor. Thick, foamy bubbles are accomplished by introducing gas in the hot glass.
Four rests will accommodate cigars or cigarette sized smokes. Beautiful, fun conversation piece.
