Marked Made in Germany Vintage Ashtray Set
Ashtrays marked Made in Germany. Highly detailed and expertly glazed snapping turtle ashtrays with large cradle rests. Fine examples of vintage German craftmanship.
After WWII countries were required to mark their production with the country of origin. German pottery was usually marked W. Germany or E. Germany. Before the war, the country was united and pottery was usually marked ‘Germany’, if marked at all. There are exceptions.
D & B (Dumler Breiden) continued to use “Made in Germany” without the W or E distinction on some items, and their mark looks quite like the mark on the turtles. But, in accordance with post WWII law, if the item was for export the exact country should be indicated.
A good clue lies in the blurry marks stamped between the hole in the center and the word Germany on the base of one turtle. See image number 5. The words “made in” can be deciphered, but the rest of the stamp mark would have been stamped over the hole. We assume the missing words are West Germany. Estimated circa: shortly after the end of WWII, 1945 to 1950.
Each measure 6.5″ long, 3.75″ at widest and 2″ tall. They are mid-size, perfect for end-tables. Sports two cigar size rests with a deep bowl. Perfect for smaller smokes too.
The glaze is in very good condition for its age. Looking closely, you will see the fine tell-tale craze lines of vintage glaze. This naturally happens to glaze after years and years of exposure to the elements. The only visible craze line, without examining closely, is on the base which you can see in the image. It is not a crack, it is a result of the glaze crazing. There are no chips or cracks.
