Description
Hand-Carved Antique Smoking Pipe Made in Germany
Exquisite hand-carved antique smoking pipe marked in Baden Baden, a spa town in Western Germany. The waters there were enjoyed as far back as Roman times. In modern German, Baden is a noun meaning “bathing”
The pipe features hand-carved decor of a stag running through the forest. The gold tree and grass coloring is still bright, as this pipe has never been used. Above the stag Baden Baden is carved.
The pipe is marked “Allwetter”, meaning “All Weather” in German. Also numbered 3460. The bowl is a high quality hardwood. The heat resistant Bakelite base screws off to reveal a round filter which is said to collect moisture providing for a dry smoke. A slotted metal cover flips up to reveal a lined bowl, also showing no signs of use. It disassembles for easy cleaning.
The rotatable stem and mouthpiece also appear to be made of Bakelite. A green silk braid ends with two white balls. No idea why.
The metal bowl rim is stamped with a mark, but unreadable. Not sure what kind of metal it is. There is a bit of atmosphere errosion on the metal rim.
These pipes are referred to as “hunting pipes” as they provide a great smoke outside no matter the weather.
Estimated circa pre-WWII. Measures 4.5″ at tallest.
