Antique Neoclassic Baroque Match Holder Ashtray from Belgium

Hand-made product of the Neoclassism decorative arts era (1769 to mid 1800s).

Neoclassic design often featured the 'laurel swag' wreath form as seen on the match holder here. The laurel swag, representing honor and victory, was originally used to decorate Roman alters and architecture, and worn on the heads of Romans and Greeks for various reasons. The 18th century Neoclassism style was an imitation of ancient Roman style, inspired by the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompei in the early mid 1700s.

Made of brass with detailed Baroque symetrical foliage in the well area. Great detail on the decor. Stamped on the base “Made in Belgium”. Has four level 5/8″ wide (will rest cigars) smoke cradles. The centerpiece was a large matchbox holder. Circa late 1700s to mid 1800s.

In original condition with natural patina (soft golden aging on the brass) and unnatural patina (antique nicotine stains). We have cleaned most of the nicotine off, but some of it remains. Additional polishing (no chemicals, just soft cloth and muscle) will remove more of the thin nicotine stains. It measures 4½” long, 3.75″ wide and 4½” tall.

Items shown in the Big Ashtray Museum are not for sale. Big Ashtray offers a large selection of antique, vintage and retro art ashtrays, plus modern-made ashtrays, for sale in the Big Ashtray shop.  Click here to view available items…
