Description
Vintage Steampunk decor solid metal ashtray by Wilton, Mount Joy, U.S.A. Circa 1960’s.
In 1963 Wilton products invented an aluminum based metal allow resistant to tarnish, will not crack, chip or dent, has the ability to withstand high temperatures, polished easily and looked like silver or pewter.
The products made from the closely guarded secret allow (called Armetale today) were formed by the ancient process of sand molding. Molten metal is poured into an impression formed into the sand. This ashtray was made by that process, it’s fine bumpy textured surface is a result of the sand mold.
The secret aluminum allow does not retain burn marks like silver or pewter would. Sturdy, will never break. As it ages, it acquires ‘patina‘, a desired effect. This ashtray has a wonderful aged patina, but it could be polished to a brighter metal if one wished. It is not plated metal, made of solid aluminum allow.
Perfect for Steampunk decor, Industrial decor and Minimalist decor styles.
Marked Wilton, Mount Joy, PA, U.S.A., with the foundry mark, on the seat/base of the ashtray. Measures 5¼ by 5½, slightly oblong. Sports a raised bar with three smoke rests. Circa 1960’s.
