About Our Vintage Ashtrays

October 2, 2014 By Big Ashtray

This is a big ashtray, centerpiece size. Ashtrays like this adorned coffee tables in the mod mid-20th Century. Measures 13" long, 5.5" at widest and weighs 1.5 lbs.

About Vintage Ashtrays Choosing retro or vintage ashtrays is a smart buy. Ashtrays made in yesteryear outshine any modern ashtray in quality, durability and design. Many ashtrays made from the 1900’s to the 1980’s were designed by creative artists and were hand-crafted in glass or pottery studios throughout the world. They were decorative works of […]

The Rise, Decline and Rise of the Ashtray

August 1, 2014 By Big Ashtray

Ancient Greek version of a screaming Spartan warrior

The Rise, Decline and Rise of the Ashtray A story is told of King Henry V receiving a gift of cigars from Spain which imported tobacco from Cuba since the late 1400’s.  Finding it much to his liking he arranged for ample supplies.  To contain the ash and stubs, the first known ashtray of sorts was […]

Blowing Smoke Up Your…

June 15, 2014 By Big Ashtray

The phrase blowing smoke up your ass derived from antique medical equipment used to blow smoke up the patients rear end.

The phrase ‘blowing smoke up your ass’ came from an 18th century medical procedure. Tobacco smoke up your rectum is ‘warming’ and thought to promote respiration.

Retro Cigarette Commercials

May 8, 2014 By Big Ashtray

Hilarious, stupid vintage commercials promoting cigarette smoking.

Cigarette T.V. commercials were outlawed many years ago.  The commercials below help explain why they were banned.  Imagine Dr.s promoting cigarettes for health, cartoon characters smoking, mothers letting children ‘hold’ their cigarettes, famous actors promoting cigarette brands, and of course the allure of looking sexy or cool with a cigarette as an accessory.  No wonder […]

Retro Smoking Advertisements

April 28, 2014 By Big Ashtray

Vintage cigarette smoking advertisement by Lucky Strikes
