Description
Cranberry glass and crystal cigar bowl by Chalet, a Canadian glass maker of the mid-20th century.
Distinctive design offers eight large and deep cradle cigar rests with ridged ash rollers next to each rest. The ash receiving bowl is 3 inches deep, allowing the cigars to float well over the base of the bowl.
Part of Chalet’s ‘Canadian Heritage’ line. The image to the left (from Chalet’s collector’s website) shows this ashtray form in amber and crystal. This ashtray offered here is in cranberry and crystal. It was formed by hand by gathering the cranberry glass, then rolling it in crystal then blowing it out with a twist. The rests and ash ridges were accomplished with hand tool. The base was polished flat.
The Chalet Glass company employed Italian glass masters whom immigrated to Canada in the 1950’s.
Circa 1950’s to 1960’s.
Big ashtray measures 8 inches round and 3 inches tall and weighs 2.3 pounds. The ashtray is in excellent condition with no damage. Trapped within the glass we can see numerous specs from the furnace. This is a maker’s miss often seen in handblown glass. As the artist was creating the bowl, debris from the furnace entered the gather. No chips or cracks.
