Description
Made in 1920s Czechoslovakia, UNUSED, with original stickers.
Rare find of Art Deco period lemon colored cut lead crystal ashtrays. On display since the 1920s…but never used. Pure crystal, made the old fashioned way, by hand. The label reads: Zelezny Brod, Bohemia. Made in the former Czechoslovakia, formerly known as Bohemia. During the 1920s, Bohemian glass makers were leading the industry in quality and design. Zelezny Brod is a Bohemian city where this glass was created. The word in the center of the label is the name of the glass art school.
Designed by Heinrich Hoffmann, a German mold-maker and proprietor of a bead shop in Paris in the 1920s. While in Paris, Hoffmann met a gentlemen named Rene Lalique (today Lalique’s art glass sells at the extreme high-end). Hoffmann’s association with Lalique influenced his jewel-like crystal forms and other glass works.
Four of the five have labels attached. One of the smallest ashtrays has an amber tint to it. The darker ashtray was made from a different glass batch than the others, and by a different hand. In the old days, colors would vary from batch to batch due to hand-mixing the organic ingredients.
Hand-cut with beveled edges. They look and feel like real jewels. The bowls are deep with an inward rim to catch and hold debris. Each have four rests. The three larger ashtrays measure 4″ x 4″, 2″ tall and weigh 1.6 lbs. The two smaller ashtrays measure 3.25″ square, 1.25″ tall and weigh 10 ounces.
